“Caps” are a recommended treatment to help protect teeth from extensive damage due to caries, fracture, erosion, etc. A crown or “cap” is important in protecting the tooth from further breakage if it cannot be restored by a “filling”.  Additionally, a cap may be necessary to protect a tooth after root canal treatment. Teeth treated with root canals may need to be strengthened with a crown to prevent further breakdown.
